May is Military Appreciation Month, and to celebrate we have many Military themed holidays such as Memorial Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, and Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day). The third Saturday in May is set aside for National Armed Forces Day.

National Armed Forces Day was created by Defense Secretary Louis Johnson, on August 31, 1949, to celebrate the unification of the Army, Navy, and Air Force under one agency; The Department of Defense.

“It is vital to the security of the nation and the establishment of a desirable peace,” Secretary Johnson said of the holiday.

“Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, toward the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense.” – Excerpted from a proclamation by President Truman Feb. 27, 1950

The Holiday is always centered around themes, such as “Teamed for Defense,” “Fight if Necessary,” and “Freedom Through Unity” The first Armed Forces Day played a part in expanding public knowledge or the military and the role they play in the community. It also served to showcase the equipment and abilities of the military to protect the country.

National Armed Forces Day is not a federal holiday, so many military installations are open for anyone wishing to take part in the celebration and to learn more about the US Military. The Holiday is celebrated by parades, receptions, and air shows as well. In Washington, D.C., 10,000 troops of all branches of the military, cadets, and veterans marched past the president and his party. It is not only here but in US Military bases around the world.

“Our Servicemen and women are serving throughout the world as guardians of peace–many of them away from their homes, their friends and their families. They are visible evidence of our determination to meet any threat to the peace with measured strength and high resolve. They are also evidence of a harsh but inescapable truth–that the survival of freedom requires great cost and commitment, and great personal sacrifice.” – President John F. Kennedy, 1963
