Giving Back With Boca Helping Hands This Thanksgiving
When the Department of Children and Families allowed those that normally do not qualify for food stamps to receive benefits due to the impact of Hurricane Irma, they were met with long lines, traffic jams, and frustration. That turnout, along with the fact that more than 14 percent of Palm Beach residents suffer from food insecurity and are unsure as to where they will get their next meal, has prompted Shiner Law Group to share the organization Boca Helping Hands this Thanksgiving with our community. Boca Helping Hands opened nearly 20 years ago as a food center and has grown to include both a job training program and a resource center for those in crisis.
Boca’s Helping Hands gathers Thanksgiving and other food items through their Box Brigade. Each donated box contained just about everything needed for a traditional holiday feast, except for the bird. The donated items included stuffing, gravy, vegetables, potatoes, and cranberry sauce, as well as the ingredients needed to make a pie for dessert. Additionally, the law firm also provided items for the food pantry. Those donations consisted of peanut butter and jelly, pasta, soup, and other nonperishable items.
Boca Helping Hands has already served over 40,000 meals in 2017. They serve a hot lunch every day except Sunday and provide a family dinner on Thursday nights. In addition, the organization has also provided almost 50,000 bags of food to needy families from their food pantry and helped over 1,100 children in nine area schools through their backpack program. This is thanks to the nearly 1.5 million pounds of food that have been donated thus far this year.
