History of Davie, Florida
Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, who served as Florida’s governor from 1905-1909, believed the state harbored some of the richest natural resources in the country and argued that the Everglades should be drained to uncover them. Indeed, after his election, Broward financed the project through land sales, which eventually became authorized by the state.
Among the first buyers was Robert Parsell (R. P.) Davie, a millionaire from Colorado, who purchased 27,500 acres in 1906. Together Parsell and Governor Broward drained the swamplands that would become the site for a new town: Zona, the “First Improved Town in the Everglades.” After a decade, Parsell constructed the burgeoning town’s new school, and the residents were so grateful that Zona was renamed in his honor.
Davie’s warm climate, fertile soil, and real estate continued to entice new settlers from around the nation, and the town adopted a reputation for its Western-themed architecture.
Today, inspired by its pioneering heritage, Davie remains one of Florida’s most dynamic communities, with its city government committed to delivering a strong quality of life while fostering a healthy local economy.
