The History Of Deerfield Beach
Deerfield Beach’s genesis began in 1890 when early settlers, who specialized in the cultivation of pineapples, tomatoes, green beans, and squash, developed the town of Hillsborough along the Hillsboro River. Over the next decade, Henry M. Flagler pushed the Florida East Coast Railroad into Miami, and the town’s population increased to 20, which spurred the creation of a local post office. As the town took shape, it formally adopted the name “Deerfield,” a reference to the numerous deer grazing in the area.
The railroad’s bisection of Deerfield promoted economic development in 1910, enabling the construction of stores, lodges, and hotels; however, the driving economic factor of Deerfield was its agriculture: farmers prepared their harvest for shipment to the north.
By 1925, the Town of Deerfield was incorporated with George Emory Butler Jr. elected as its first mayor. The population rose to 1,300 residents, and the city’s first public library was opened. In 1939, the city was renamed to “Deerfield Beach” to promote the scenic oceanfront. A burgeoning tourism industry flourished throughout the 1950s as new hotels were constructed along the shoreline.
Today, the City of Deerfield Beach enjoys a quality of life unrivaled by its neighbors. Its economic prowess has encouraged the development of vibrant industries, including manufacturing, distribution, and commercial enterprises (in addition to tourism).
