Celebrating Firefighter Eric Patrie
Firefighter Eric Patrie lost his battle to brain cancer on November 11th, 2012 at age 37. Patrie had suffered an unexplained seizure in July 2011 While he worked at the Delray Beach Fire and Rescue and was transported to the hospital where he learned that he had been suffering from anapestic astrocytoma a rare malignant glioma that develops from astrocytes, star-shaped cells that protect nerve cells within the brain and spinal cord. He battled for 16 months, and endured multiple brain surgeries, rounds of chemotherapy and stays at Duke University hospital for experimental treatments.
Patrie was a 13-year Veteran of the Delray Beach Fire and Rescue. He was an accomplished hero, having Achieved Hazmat Technician certification and was assigned to the Special Operations Station. He was Dive Rescue certified and was a part of the dive rescue team at Delray Beach Fire/Rescue. He was a family man, as one year after gaining his dream Job with Delray Fire and Rescue, he married his high school sweetheart, Kim Patrie, and had two daughters. The two had shared 22 years together.
The Patries struggled financially while the Firefighter was in treatment, and The Delray Beach Firefighters, and Paramedic Benevolence Organization organized the Annual Firefighter Eric Patrie 5k Run/Walk to assist the firefighter’s family with the financial burden while dealing with this disease. This year, 2017 proceeds from the 5k will go to local firefighters battling cancer.
Registration for the event ends on May 5. The race is on Saturday, May 6 along scenic A1A in Delray Beach and starts promptly at 7 am. There will be a free kid’s Fun Run, vendors, fire trucks, Raffles And many more activities to commemorate Eric Petrie and help other firefighters with Cancer.
