History of Greenacres, Florida
During the Florida land boom in the 1920s, Palm Beach County and its coastal resort areas provided a haven for Florida’s wealthy population, offering housing and community services that were virtually unavailable to middle class families. Lawrence Carter Swain purchased 320 acres of property and divided the land into plats. (Plat II became the original section of the city, which still exists today.) By 1926, the Town of Greenacres was incorporated with a population of 1,250 people, and Lawrence Carter Swain moved from Massachusetts to Greenacres with his family to further develop his vision of providing a community for the middle-class. The City’s slogan became A Good Place to Live.
Did you know… the name Greenacres was the winning entry in a local naming contest?
Today, Greenacres remains one of Palm Beach County’s most thriving municipalities, as significant investment continues to develop the city’s neighborhoods, parks, landscaping and beautification programs, as well as the efficiency in service delivery.
Things to Do in Greenacres, Florida
Greenacres is primarily known for its natural scenery, and the City houses 11 parks with a combined area of over 93 acres dedicated to recreational day and night activities for people of all ages. Nature lovers can beat the town’s hustle and bustle by visiting one of Palm Beach’s standout parks: Okeeheelee Park, a 1,700-acre county park with a nature center, bike paths, hiking, fishing, and water skiing, as well as a BMX track. Okeeheelee Park also offers superb equestrian and golf options, with three nine-hole courses and nine miles of horse trails.
Residents and visitors can also take advantage of the city’s slate of rich dining options, retail outlets, and entertainment venues along Lake Worth Road, Forest Hill Boulevard, Tenth Avenue North, and Jog Road. The City is also home to five elementary schools, three middle schools—one of which is named in Lawrence Carter Swain’s honor—and a high school, as well as several houses of worship, a library, and city post office.
