History Of Hollywood, FL

Hollywood’s beginnings trace back to Joseph Young of Washington state, who dreamed of a new Hollywood on the East Coast of the United States. In 1920, Young arrived in South Florida and surveyed the underdeveloped low-lying marshlands that would become his “Dream City,” suitable for the wealthy and working classes.

Many of his designs served as a precursor to today’s zoning regulations, and he incorporated into his plans three large circles that would become present-day Young Circle, Watson Circle, and Presidential Circle.

Following the formation of the Hollywood Land and Water Company, Young purchased a parcel of land that would set the stage for Hollywood’s development. He successfully encouraged purchasers to secure property in the new city, causing Hollywood’s real estate market to reach an all-time high. Construction ensued expeditiously, which produced projects such as the Hollywood Boulevard Bridge.

The Growth Of Hollywood

By the late 1920s, Hollywood’s city limits included 18,000 acres with six-and-a-half miles of oceanfront. With over 2,000 residencies, 36 apartment buildings, 252 commercial buildings, and nine hotels, Hollywood’s growth spurred the neighboring towns to petition the Hollywood City Commission to permit their annexation into the fast-growing city; however, when a hurricane decimated the area in 1926, much of the city’s progress halted. Hollywood’s stock market—and its population—plummeted. Hallandale and Dania seceded.

Young led the city’s recovery efforts and later dredged shallow Lake Mabel to the Atlantic Ocean, establishing Port Everglades—one of Florida’s busiest seaports.

Today, Hollywood experiences renewed growth that it had enjoyed for much of the latter twentieth century, and the city continues to serve as a significant cultural and entertainment community in South Florida.

Things to Do In Hollywood, FL

Hollywood’s amenities are a perfect accommodation for any budget and taste, from oceanfront bars and restaurants along Hollywood’s Boardwalk—modeled after Atlantic City, NJ—to high-end dining and shopping options. During the holiday season, the Boardwalk hosts an annual Candy Cane Parade, featuring floats, marching bands and creative displays from civic, non-profit, and children’s groups.

Hollywood also boasts year-long activities and live entertainment. The city’s historic downtown has a growing arts and culture community, giving rise to murals, art installments, and galleries in Young Circle’s Arts Park. While in Arts Park, bring a blanket and enjoy the delicious cuisine from over 25 food trucks!

Nature enthusiasts can relax at the Anne Kolb Nature Center located in Hollywood’s West Lake Track, which sports 1,500 acres of mangrove preserves. The site is also a protected bird sanctuary and fish nursery.

Need to get around? Hollywood’s trolley service will take passengers to and from Hollywood Beach to Downtown Hollywood. Residents and visitors can also use Broward County Transit and Tri-Rail stations.

Staying Safe in Hollywood

As with many popular coastal destinations in Florida, the Shiner Law Group encourages residents and visitors to exercise caution when dining, shopping or enjoying the many amenities throughout Hollywood. Interstate 96, the Florida Turnpike, Tri-County Commuter Rail, and two major railroads cut through the city. Observing local road laws, operating vehicles safely, and yielding to pedestrians is paramount.

Moreover, with destinations such as the Hard Rock Hotel or Hollywood’s historic downtown, residents and visitors should be aware of the potential for personal injury on commercial or public premises. These debilitating and sometimes fatal accidents can cause sciatica, back pain, concussion, knee pain, shoulder pain, joint pain, and traumatic brain injury, all of which can lead to extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation, as well as long periods of disability or even a permanent inability to engage in gainful employment.
