History of Jensen Beach
Jensen Beach’s history began in 1881 when John Laurence Jensen, an immigrant from Denmark, arrived and established a pineapple homestead on Florida’s southeast coast—the site that would become future Jensen Beach.
Jensen was so successful in his cultivation of pineapples that he constructed a factory to accommodate the growing demand. He used Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway to ship millions of boxes annually between the June and July seasons, solidifying Jensen Beach as the “Pineapple Capital of the World”; however, a hard freeze in 1895 devastated most small pineapple plantation-injurys. Jensen Beach was further met with disaster when two fires, occurring in 1908 and 1910, scorched the remaining pineapple farms. The pineapple industry ultimately collapsed by 1920 due to financial and agricultural problems.
Jensen Beach’s farmers sought to revitalize their efforts by raising citrus, though pineapples remained a symbol of the community. Today, Jensen Beach celebrates the plant’s legacy by hosting the annual Jensen Beach Pineapple Festival.
