History of Lauderhill, Florida
What began as a small dairy community, Lauderhill’s modern genesis began with Herbert Sadkin, a developer of the New York-based All-State Properties who reprised his success in Florida following the construction of 200 homes in Montauk, NY, fashioned after Andrew Geller’s “Typical American House,” which premiered at the American Exhibition in Moscow. The new development was called “Lauderhill,” resulting from a conversation Sadkin had with his friend William Safire—a journalist with The New York Times. Sadkin originally intended for the town to be called “Sunnydale,” but Safire commented that Sunnydale sounded too much like a neighborhood in Brooklyn.
By the 1970s, Lauderhill continued to enjoy economic growth, as the northwest section of the city transformed into a single-family home community. The Inverrary Country Club, as well as the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic golf course, were built during this time.
