Pompano Beach History
While settlers had lived in the area since the mid-1880s, the development of Pompano did not occur until 1896 when George Butler and Frank Sheen, who worked as railway employees, arrived with their families by railway on February 22. (The city received its name by an account that Sheen wrote the name of the fish he had for supper on his survey of the area: Pompano.)
At the turn of the century, Pompano continued to expand westward from the coast and became the southernmost settlement of Palm Beach County in 1906. The Hillsboro Lighthouse was completed later that year and lit in 1907, designating the northernmost waypoint of the Florida Reef. By 1908, the Town of Pompano was incorporated into then Dade County, with John R. Mizell elected as the city’s first mayor; however, when Broward County was established in 1915, the boundaries of Pompano existed in all three counties.
In the 1920s, Florida’s economic prosperity that gave birth to the land boom enabled the Town of Pompano to undergo significant development. By 1947, following a population surge as a result of World War II, the City of Pompano merged with a newly formed beach municipality to become the City of Pompano Beach.
