Boca Raton-Based Trial Attorneys File Suit for Failure of College of Osteopathic Medicine to Safeguard against Toxic Levels of Formaldehyde

Boca Raton, FL January 25, 2018 – A South Florida university is headed to court for allegedly exposing a medical student to toxic levels of formaldehyde, Shiner Law Group, the Boca Raton-based firm representing the plaintiff, announced today.

In a suit filed earlier this year against Nova Southeastern University in the 17th Judicial Circuit in Broward County, attorneys for Shiner Law Group allege Laura Halpern was exposed to the noxious substance in the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s anatomy laboratory as a medical student beginning in the fall 2014 semester. Attorneys for the firm aim to proceed with the discovery phase of litigation.

As a result of her exposure, the student alleges that the dangerous levels of formaldehyde on Nova Southeastern University property led to a deterioration in her health, including physical manifestations related to the substance, and cognitive impairment.

An attorney with Shiner Law Group alleges that Nova Southeastern University failed to take prophylactic measures to protect against formaldehyde exposure, including access to personal protective equipment in the university’s anatomy laboratory. According to court documents, the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health has cited and proposed financial penalties against NSU for multiple violations related to high formaldehyde levels, Shiner Law Group said.
