Slip and Fall vs. Trip and Fall – Know the Difference

SLIP AND FALL VS. TRIP AND FALL David Shiner Law Group

Understanding the Terminology: Is There a Difference Between a Slip and Fall and a Trip and Fall? The National Safety Council, through its research, has found that one of the leading causes of unintentional injuries in the U.S. is falls. The organization has noted that almost 9 million visits to emergency rooms throughout the country have occurred due to some type of fall.

When we think of falls, one of the first things that come to mind is a slip and fall or a trip and fall. Many people use the phrases interchangeably; however, from a legal standpoint, your Lake Worth Slip and Fall Attorney will tell you that it is important for injured fall victims to understand the differences between the two.

Is There Really a Difference Between a Slip and Fall and a Trip and Fall?

The short answer to that question is “yes.” In fact, many people may not realize that there are considerable differences between the two, many of which concern the kinds of injuries one can incur.

First, let’s take a look at slip and falls.

What can lead to slip and fall occurrences? Typically, slippery and/or wet substances on a floor surface or the ground can lead to a slip and fall. For example, if someone spills water or some other wet substance on a hard floor surface, anyone passing through that area might slip and fall.

Still, it’s not just wet substances that can lead to slips and falls. Small round objects, like marbles or beads, can lead to someone falling as well. The types of injuries associated with slip and fall incidents generally include neck and back injuries, hip injuries, herniated disks and injuries to the back of the head.

So, what’s different about a trip and fall?

Trips and falls often occur when there are uneven surfaces or flooring, or objects in one’s path that can cause a person to stumble. A common example of this is a broken or uneven sidewalk.

The injuries stemming from trips and falls differ a bit from those sustained in slips and falls. A trip and fall can lead to fractures to the hands and arms, elbow and knee injuries and injuries to the face and front of the head.

What You Need to Do After a Slip/Trip and Fall

If you are involved in a slip and fall or trip and fall, the first thing you should do is tend to your medical needs as soon as possible to ensure that your injuries (if any) are not more serious than they appear.

No one ever knows when slips and falls or trips and falls will happen; however, when such incidents occur, it is crucial for fall victims to take notes and gather as much information as possible from the scene. This is especially important if you intend to pursue litigation to seek compensation for your injuries.

If you have been injured in a slip and fall or trip and fall incident, do not try to handle the case on your own. Contact The Shiner Law Group today to learn more about your legal rights and options.
