Warning: Samsung Washing Machines Explode

First, it was Samsung phones, now it’s an exploding washing machine.

A mother, who was doing laundry with her four-year-old son nearby, said it was like a “bomb went off.” She told an Atlanta TV station, “All of a sudden, without warning, the machine just exploded… there were wires, nuts, the actual top was laying on the floor.”

Fortunately, neither she nor her son were injured. Shockingly, this is not the first incident.

First complains, now a lawsuit

A reported 21 people filed complaints to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. It seems to be an issue with a support rod in the top loader that can become unfastened during the spin cycle.

According to CNN, victims in Texas, Georgia and Indiana all said they were washing clothes when the machines suddenly exploded. A lawsuit filed in New Jersey claimed Samsung “has moved aggressively to collect and destroy all evidence of the defective machines” after they exploded.

This is a look at the aftermath.

Samsung has not issued a recall on the washing machines. It recommends customers use the lower speed delicate cycle when washing heavy, water-resistant items.

Samsung’s PR Nightmare

With the timing of this alert, so soon after the fallout of exploding cell phones, the conversation quickly trended on Twitter:

What if you own a Samsung washer?

Samsung issued this statement on its website:

“We are in active discussions with the CPSC to address potential safety issues related to certain top-load washing machines manufactured between March 2011 and April 2016. In rare cases, affected unites may experience abnormal vibrations that could pose a risk of personal injury to property damage when washing bedding, bulky or water-resistant items.

Samsung doesn’t name its models but allows customers to enter the serial number to see whether their machine is among those affected.
