History of Hypoluxo, Florida

Hypoluxo’s genesis depicts a setting of untamed wilderness, when daring pioneers braved the frontier in search of opportunity. Among them were Hannibal and Margretta Pierce, who sailed onto Lake Worth in 1873 for a small island on the south end. Hannibal and his family developed a homestead from scavenged wood along the beach with palmetto fronds for a roof.

By 1874, approximately ten people lived on Lake Worth’s shores, and a man was dispatched from Miami to establish a voting precinct—Pierce’s home was selected as the polling site. Three years later, Pierce assumed the post of keeper of the Orange Grove House of Refuge—a five-house refuge built along the coast for ship-wrecked sailors—and moved his family there.

The Pierce’s new home resided close to a Seminole camp, and the Pierces developed a friendly relationship with the tribe. One day, Margretta inquired about the lake’s name, to which she was given the answer: “Hypoluxo,” which loosely translates to “water all around, no get out.” The Pierces later adopted the name for the island on which their home was built.

After 13 months, Pierce and his family returned to their island. Hannibal, after getting involved with a regular freight service, became the postmaster of Hypoluxo, the birth place of the barefoot mailmen—a post he retained until his death in 1898.

The Town of Hypoluxo was incorporated in 1955, regarding itself as the “Home of the Barefoot Mailman.”

Things to Do in Hypoluxo

Hypoluxo is indeed a small town, modeled after the architecture found in Key West; however, many of the town’s main attractions focus on its rich, natural history.

Residents and guests can experience life before modern development at the Hypoluxo Hammock, which focuses on recreating the setting as it looked during the early 1900s. The Hammock is located on the grounds of the Town Hall.

Those with an artistic disposition can check out the “Sail into the Future” sculpture by Frank Varga, located in Hypoluxo’s Garnett Park—don’t forget the picnic baskets!
