Beach Safety Tips | Shiner Summer Safety Series

Happy Summer, Friends! Summer is here, and your friends at Shiner Law Group encourage you to stay safe with the following tips.

Check The Weather
You should avoid the beach if the forecast calls for lighting. You should always wait 30 minutes after the last thunder boom before back out to the sand.

Check Beach Flags
It’s important to check the beach conditions before entering the water. If you see a current of off-colored water or it looks choppy, steer clear. If you get pulled out by the current, stay calm and save your energy and keep breathing. DO NOT try to swim against the current. Try to stay calm and gain your composure and start swimming horizontally to the shore until you’re out of the current. Once out of the current, swim diagonally towards the coast. If you find that you can’t make it to the shore, wave your arm, make noise and call for help.

Beware Of Ocean Life
Mussels and Clamshells can be very sharp and can puncture or scrape your skin or result in serious injuries if you’re not careful. You should look out for Jellyfish as well. Many varieties have tentacles that can discharge stingers containing venom into your skin causing painful stinging.

Apply Sunscreen
Protect yourself from harmful UVA/UVB rays by using sunscreen and reapply when necessary; doing this will help prevent sunburn and skin cancer. *Sunscreen should be applied several times during your day and after being in the water.

Use A Life Jacket, Water Wings or Floaties
If you or your child is not an experienced swimmer, you should consider wearing a life jacket, water wings or floaties. If you decide to use water wings, be sure to break often and take them off. Do NOT leave your child unattended if he/she is not an experienced swimmer.

Stay Sober and Alert
Drinking alcohol can impair your judgment. While under the influence of alcohol, you can make unnecessary risks. Alcohol can lower your body temperature and weaken your ability to swim. Unfortunately, This is a significant cause for many drownings.

Stay Hydrated
The summer heat and visual effects fo waves can easily lead to reduced energy or disorientation. Stay hydrated with plenty of water and snacks.
